DeepDNA local MCP server
ai.deepdna · Updated
Reads a raw DNA file on your computer and reports the variants DeepDNA curates, with sources.
At a glance
DeepDNA local is an MCP server in the Marketing & Social category. It runs locally over stdio via `uvx deepdna-mcp`, and declares no required credentials. It exposes 5 tools, including list_genes, lookup_gene and lookup_variant. It scores B (76/100) on the MCP Skills Hub health score as of Oct 28, 2026.
One-click install
Opens your editor and pre-fills the config. Your editor will ask before adding it.
How to install DeepDNA local in your AI client
Setup for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, Cline and VS Code — copy-paste ready.
How to install DeepDNA local in Claude CodeAnthropic's agentic CLI
Add the server
bashclaude mcp add local -- uvx deepdna-mcpVerify it's connected
bashclaude mcp listSharing it with your team?
Add `--scope project` to write it to .mcp.json in the repository root, which you can commit (with the secrets left as environment variables).
Use it in a session
Ask Claude to use the tools this server exposes (e.g. list_genes, lookup_gene, lookup_variant). It discovers them automatically.
How to install DeepDNA local in Claude DesktopDesktop app (MCP config)
Open your MCP config
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json · Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
Add this server
json{ "mcpServers": { "local": { "command": "uvx", "args": [ "deepdna-mcp" ] } } }Restart Claude Desktop
The tools appear under the 🔌 menu once the app reloads.
How to install DeepDNA local in CursorAI-first code editor
Create / edit .cursor/mcp.json in your project
json{ "mcpServers": { "local": { "command": "uvx", "args": [ "deepdna-mcp" ] } } }Enable it
Cursor Settings → MCP → toggle the server on. Tools become available to the Composer/Agent.
How to install DeepDNA local in Codex CLIOpenAI coding agent
Add to ~/.codex/config.toml
toml[mcp_servers.local] command = "uvx" args = ["deepdna-mcp"]Run Codex
Codex loads MCP servers from config.toml on startup and exposes their tools to the agent.
How to install DeepDNA local in WindsurfCodeium's agentic IDE
Edit ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json
json{ "mcpServers": { "local": { "command": "uvx", "args": [ "deepdna-mcp" ] } } }Reload
Windsurf → Cascade → refresh MCP servers. Cascade can now call the tools.
How to install DeepDNA local in ClineVS Code autonomous agent
Open Cline → MCP Servers → Configure
Adds to cline_mcp_settings.json.
Add the server
json{ "mcpServers": { "local": { "command": "uvx", "args": [ "deepdna-mcp" ] } } }
How to install DeepDNA local in VS CodeCopilot / MCP support
Create .vscode/mcp.json
json{ "servers": { "local": { "type": "stdio", "command": "uvx", "args": [ "deepdna-mcp" ] } } }Start it
VS Code shows a ▶ Start action above the server entry. Agent mode (Copilot Chat) can then use the tools.
What tools does DeepDNA local expose? (5)
Taken from the project's README — the server itself was not queried, so check its docs for the exact schemas.
- list_genesThe genes in the knowledge base, with a one-line summary and category for each
- lookup_geneEverything curated about one gene: function, key variants with rsIDs, phenotypes, drug interactions, what a consumer genotyping array can and cannot tell you, and sources
- lookup_variantOne variant by dbSNP rsID: gene, star-allele or common name, alleles on the plus strand of GRCh37, effect, frequency note and sources. Takes the rsID only, never a genotype
- lookup_drug_geneGuidance for a gene, optionally for one drug: guideline (CPIC or DPWG where one exists), summary, phenotype groups and sources
- check_medicationsSplits a list of generic drug names into drugs with a curated record (gene, and a `basis` field: CPIC or DPWG guideline, drug label, or primary literature) and drugs not covered. Needs no genotype
What the code can do
Source analysis currently covers npm packages only. This server ships as a Python package, which needs a different parser.

Signals gathered from the source repo and package registry — not a safety verdict.
What it can reach
- Runs code on your machine — Executes as a local process with your user's permissions, including filesystem access.
- Downloads at launch — The package is fetched from its registry each run unless you pin a version.
- Last commit today — Actively maintained.
- Repository created 17 days ago — Very new project with little track record yet.
- 0 GitHub stars — Very little community usage so far.

Full READMEDeepDNA MCP server
A remote Model Context Protocol server that gives AI agents cited pharmacogenomic and gene-variant lookups, so answers can quote CPIC and DPWG guidance and its sources. This repository also holds a local package that reads a raw DNA file on the user's own computer; nothing from the file is sent to DeepDNA, but what the package reports becomes part of the conversation with the AI model.
https://deepdna.ai/mcpStreamable HTTP, stateless, no API key, no account. Listed in the official MCP registry as ai.deepdna/knowledge.
Educational information only, not medical advice. The server reports what curated sources and guidelines say about a gene, a variant or a drug–gene pair. It does not diagnose, prescribe or recommend a dose.
Tools
| Tool | What it returns | |---|---| | list_genes | The genes in the knowledge base, with a one-line summary and category for each | | lookup_gene | Everything curated about one gene: function, key variants with rsIDs, phenotypes, drug interactions, what a consumer genotyping array can and cannot tell you, and sources | | lookup_variant | One variant by dbSNP rsID: gene, star-allele or common name, alleles on the plus strand of GRCh37, effect, frequency note and sources. Needs no genotype |
All five tools are read-only.
Two prompts, medication_review and explain_variant, package the common questions for clients that show MCP prompts.
Coverage today is 12 genes: CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP2D6, SLCO1B1, VKORC1, UGT1A1, G6PD, MTHFR, COMT, HFE, APOE and BRCA1, with 51 curated drug–gene pairs across 11 of them: 40 cite a CPIC or DPWG guideline, the rest a drug label or the primary literature; the basis field in check_medications says which (guideline is null, or "drug label", when no guideline exists). It is a small, reviewed set, not a mirror of PharmGKB/ClinPGx. Every record lists its sources. The level field (the guideline's evidence grade) is null for every pair today.
