How to install Everything in Claude CodeAnthropic's agentic CLI

  1. Add the server

    bash
claude mcp add everything -- npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-everything
  2. Verify it's connected

    bash
    claude mcp list
  3. Sharing it with your team?

Add `--scope project` to write it to .mcp.json in the repository root, which you can commit (with the secrets left as environment variables).

  4. Use it in a session

Ask Claude to use the tools this server exposes. It discovers them automatically.

What tools does Everything expose?

This server runs as a local package. We only query remote servers for their tool list — asking this one would mean executing it, so its tools are listed in the documentation below.

What the code can do

Read from the published package source — never executed. Parsed 48 of 48 source files.

This server can read and write files, make network requests and read your environment variables.

How it was published

  • Published by a verified CI identity (github trusted publishing) rather than a personal token.
  • Has a provenance attestation tying this artifact to the commit it was built from.
  • 6 npm maintainers · last published by GitHub Actions.

This MCP server attempts to exercise all the features of the MCP protocol. It is not intended to be a useful server, but rather a test server for builders of MCP clients. It implements prompts, tools, resources, sampling, and more to showcase MCP capabilities.

Tools, Resources, Prompts, and Other Features

A complete list of the registered MCP primitives and other protocol features demonstrated can be found in the Server Features document.

Protocol versions

The server serves both protocol eras, over stdio and Streamable HTTP, from one process:

  • 2026-07-28 clients connect with server/discover, send their protocol version, identity and capabilities with each request, and have no session. The server demonstrates the revision's new features for them: multi-round-trip requests (input_required) with requestState, subscriptions/listen change notifications, per-request log levels, cache hints (ttlMs / cacheScope), the tasks extension (io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks) under the extensions capability, and x-mcp-header with JSON Schema 2020-12 tool schemas.
  • 2025-era clients connect with the initialize handshake, as before. Elicitation, sampling and roots are served to them from the same multi-round-trip handlers through the SDK's legacy shim.

Roots, sampling and logging are deprecated as of 2026-07-28 and stay available, labelled deprecated. Server Features marks which era each feature belongs to.

Requirements

Node.js 24 or later, when the server runs through npx or from source.
